- Respect for Human Rights
The Harima Chemicals Group recognizes that respect for human rights is one of the major elements of its management. The Harima Global Business Code of Conduct stipulates that we respect human rights, comply with the relevant laws and regulations of each country and international rules, and fulfill our social responsibilities with the highest ethical standards to create a sustainable society. In addition, we thoroughly disseminate these matters within the company by means of the Business Code of Conduct Handbook and in-house training.
Respect for human rights is one of the major managerial elements of the Harima Chemicals Group. We recognize that child labor, forced labor, neglect of workers' rights (e.g. the right to organize), poor working conditions, sexism, discrimination against sexual orientation and gender identity (LGBTQ+, etc.), discrimination against mental and physical disabilities and illness, discrimination against race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, harassment, etc. are all recognized as Human Rights Risks that may occur through the activities of our business and organization.
The Harima Chemicals Group not only complies with international rules and the laws and regulations of each country, but also acts in good faith based on values and ethics as a member of society, and through this, we strive to realize fair and appropriate management, achieve harmony with civil society, and develop creatively. For instance, we clearly stipulate respect for human rights and policy upon prohibition of discriminatory treatment in the Detailed Rules of Operation in the Business Code of Conduct, respect the human rights of each individual, do not discriminate on the grounds of gender, age, nationality, race, physical characteristics, disability, AIDS, etc., nor condone sexual harassment and power harassment, and strive to ensure thorough implementation by means of the Business Code of Conduct Handbook and in-house training.
Harima Chemicals Group endeavors initiatives related to respect for human rights to cover a wide range of the Company's business and organizational activities carried out at its head offices, consolidated subsidiaries and affiliates. With regard to the importance of initiatives in the supply chain, which is considered difficult to deal with, we work on confirming the local laws and regulations related to the source of raw materials, confirming the human rights response of the supplier, confirming matters pertaining to child labor and forced labor by site visits, refusing to engage in transactions with enterprises conducting illegal practices such as tax evasion, changing the source of procurement and procuring from companies that have received certifications and confirmation by third-party organizations, etc. These initiatives will be enhanced on a continuous basis to ensure high standards of operation and compliance.
In August 2024, Harima endorsed the objectives of the “Council for the Promotion of Partnership Building for the Future”, an initiative of the Japanese Government’s Cabinet Office and several other bodies. In this regard, the company released the “Declaration of Partnership Building”, a document that reiterates our commitment to complying with desirable business practices in the supply chain, with a focus on enhancing added value and strengthening collaboration with our various business partners.
