Harima plans to open a facility for the production of myrcene on the premises of its manufacturing hub, Kakogawa Plant, Japan. Scheduled for completion in April 2023, this is Harima's first myrcene plant in Japan. A key ingredient in aroma oils and fragrances, myrcene is obtained from the pinene compound of turpentine, a natural substance extracted from pine trees. The energy required in the operation of the plant will be primarily self-generated from renewable energy sources and carbon-neutral fuel, making it a truly sustainable facility.

Background
Harima has long been involved in the manufacture of products developed using rosin, turpentine and tall oil, derived from pine trees. In Brasil and Argentina, we manufacture and sell gum turpentine, while in New Zealand we have a facility for the distillation of crude sulphate turpentine (CST), a byproduct of kraft pulping, and also manufacture and sell CST derivatives and myrcene.
With the demand for flavors and fragrances on the rise in world markets, and in particular the need for more sustainable, plant-based resources, growing attention is now given to enhanced traceability and protection of human rights throughout the supply chain. The new plant successfully meets these criteria, and we are proud to be able to expand production network to meet the diverse needs of our customers.
This is also expected to open new opportunities for the development of turpentine-based products, that can successfully support business growth into the future.
