Harima is glad to announce the start of its first floating solar-power generation business on a reservoir located in the vicinity of the Kakogawa Plant, our main production site in Japan, as of March 1. This initiative is part of Harima's GHG Emission Reduction Policy announced in 2021, which stipulates curbing greenhouse gas emissions by 46%, relative to FY2013 levels, by 2027, 3 years ahead of Japan's national target, and further aiming for carbon-neutral operations by 2050.

Background
Kakogawa city, Harima's birthplace and home to our manufacturing hub, as well as the neighboring region have seen a decrease in agricultural activities, with implications on the management and vitality of the over 600 reservoirs available in the area. The current project reiterates Harima's long-standing commitment to protect the environment, give back to the community, and enhance business all at the same time.

Power Generation and Usage
Our approx. 1,700 solar panels installed on structures on the surface of the reservoir are expected to generate an annual 900,000kWh, representing enough power to supply the electricity needs of 250 homes. The power will be distributed to the Kakogawa Site via a private transmission line, and also to a local community center for everyday use, as well as for emergency situations when an accumulator and power conditioner will also be on standby.

Main Contributions

1. Environmental Contributions
Harima has long been involved in emission reduction, opening a biomass power plant with a capacity of 4,000kW, at the Kakogawa Site in 2005, and a solar power generation facility with a capacity of 1,129kW at Iho (Takasago city, Japan) in 2014. Through these initiatives, approx. 44,000 tons of GHG emissions are reduced annually, with the floating solar-power generation business expected to further mitigate 325 tons.

2. Community Contributions
Harima will provide financial assistance to the community through long-term lease of the reservoir, and, with part of the power being distributed to a nearby community center for everyday use as well as for emergency situations, the locality's disaster response will be enhanced. In accord with the city's plans for improving the environment, the project will also be partially funded by the Japanese Ministry of Environment through an emission mitigation grant program.

3. Business Contributions
The Kakogawa Site will benefit from stable power supply derived from the expansion of
renewable energy resources, while own-generated power will help curb production costs.

Harima's unwavering commitment to protecting the environment stems from our identity as a pine chemical manufacturer that promotes products developed using natural and renewable resources. In light of our corporate philosophy and environmental policies, we are committed to actively contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
